Book Review: Next Christmas Will Be Different - Pauline Barclay

SynopsisWhen the O’Reilly family gather for the festive season it is a time for catching up, eating too much and making promises, but can the promises be kept?

Review - I am so pleased this book was a free download from Amazon.  I presume it does sell on there too, but if anyone paid for it they would be very disappointed.  A very short story which really is not much more than a piece of flash fiction.  The author makes it into a book by giving away the first five chapters of a four of her novels.  Hmm!  Personally if I have read the first five chapters of a novel I am not likely to buy the book unless it is outstanding and I really cannot put it down.  I know authors want to get their work out there but I think this is not really the most cost effective way of doing so.  If a reader feels they have got through part of the story already for free are they going to pay for the rest of it by buying the book?  When it came to these snippets I got through two of the first five chapters but could not face anymore.  These stories did not grab me and at the end of the day, perhaps feeling tired I could not be bothered to try the rest.

Back to the short story itself.  A nice little story about a family Christmas.  Mary enjoying being surrounded by her seven children and their families, and engaging in the usual Christmas activities.  Will next Christmas be in any different?  It is well written and for that alone I should give it 3*.  However, the format of the book as a whole does not warrant that and therefore I am going to mark this as 2*.
