It's my turn to host book group this month (it's not but I have stepped in to the breach, as it were). I wanted to try and put together a suitable and varied selection. I love my reading pals to bits but they are fairly conservative in their choices, and I have to remember that the average age of the group is a little older than me. Not that there is anything wrong with that, it's just that vampires, fantasy, YA, chicklit and zombies are off limits. However, even if some don't like historical fiction or crime or scifi, I still aim to mix it all up but there is no point in adding complete non starters into the pile.
My library loot is for the book group mix:
Brighton Rock - Graham Greene
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks - Rebecca Skloot
The News Where You Are - Catherine O' Flynn
I am happy with the above three titles and they are going into the mix. These are suggested reading group which our library service offer in their reading groups.
Bamboo Grove - Romy Wood
I don't know if it was the attraction of a local author or whether the synopsis I read online didn't say very much, but when I read the back cover I knew this one would have to go back to the library. I'm not sure I would want to read it myself!
Now this is my epic fail on my book buying ban! Spend £11.50. One duplicate which goes to the charity shop and one for the teen who is a massive Nick Hornby fan. They were all paperbacks priced at 50p each, do the maths. A lot of books and my TBR is now double packed right up to the top shelf!!
High Fidelity - Nick Hornby ( for the teen)
The Loop - Nicholas Evans (duplicate and already read)
Started Early, Took My Dog - Kate Atkinson
The Stepmother's Support Group - Sam Baker
Guernica - Dave Boling
Falling Angels - Tracy Chevalier
The Lady and the Unicorn - Tracy Chevalier
The Horse Whisperer - Nicholas Evans
A Fool's Alphabet - Sebastian Faulks
Casino Royale - Ian Fleming
A Respectable Trade - Philippa Gregory
East of the Sun - Julia Gregson
Blackberry Wine - Joanne Harris
Seabiscuit - Laura Hillenbrand
A Widow for One Year - John Irving
The Pursuit of Happiness - Douglas Kennedy
The Historian - Elizabeth Kostova
The Last Letter From Your Love - Jojo Moyes
Me Before You - Jojo Moyes
Sing You Home - Jodi Picoult
Major Pettigrew's Last Stand - Helen Simonson
Music and Silence - Rose Tremain
The Accidental Tourist - Anne Tyler
This was a big week for me! What books came into your abode this week?
